Therapy Modalities, Explained

"What kind of therapy is this?" is one of the most common — and most important — questions people ask. Here's a plain-language guide to the evidence-based approaches our therapists draw on, and what each one is best suited for.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Change unhelpful thought patterns.

CBT helps you identify the thoughts and beliefs driving difficult feelings and behaviours, then learn practical tools to shift them. Strong evidence for anxiety, depression, OCD, and stress.

Often helpful for: Anxiety, depression, panic, OCD, sleep issues

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Build skills to ride the emotional waves.

Originally developed for intense emotional experiences, DBT teaches four core skill sets: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Often helpful for: Emotional overwhelm, self-harm urges, relationship conflict, BPD

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Live by your values, even with hard feelings.

ACT focuses on accepting what's outside your control and committing to actions that move you toward what matters. Less about fighting symptoms, more about building a meaningful life.

Often helpful for: Chronic stress, burnout, life transitions, perfectionism

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing)

Help the brain finish processing trauma.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements) to help the brain reprocess stuck traumatic memories so they no longer trigger the same intense response.

Often helpful for: PTSD, single-incident trauma, complex trauma, phobias

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Get to know the different parts of yourself.

IFS sees the mind as made up of 'parts' — like the inner critic, the protector, the wounded child. Therapy helps you build a compassionate relationship with each part, led by your core Self.

Often helpful for: Trauma, self-criticism, internal conflict, identity work

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Strengthen the emotional bond in relationships.

Primarily used with couples, EFT helps partners understand the deeper emotions and attachment needs underneath their conflicts, and reshape the dance between them.

Often helpful for: Couples, repair after rupture, disconnection, recurring arguments

Narrative Therapy

Rewrite the story you tell about yourself.

Narrative therapy separates the person from the problem. Together, we examine the stories shaping your identity and find space to author new ones aligned with your values.

Often helpful for: Identity, life transitions, grief, marginalization

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Build on what's already working.

Rather than dig deep into the past, solution-focused therapy looks at exceptions, strengths, and small concrete steps toward a preferred future.

Often helpful for: Specific goals, time-limited work, motivation

Culturally Sensitive & Trauma-Informed Care

Care that sees your whole context.

Not a single modality, but the lens we bring to everything we do — recognizing how culture, identity, systemic experiences, and past trauma shape what healing looks like for you.

Often helpful for: Everyone — woven through all our work

We rarely use just one.

Most of our work is integrative — your therapist will draw on whichever approaches best fit your goals, your history, and the way you process the world. The relationship between you and your therapist matters more than any single method.
